How We Install Ductless Air Conditioners

Ductless air conditioners are popular and practical options for providing homeowners with a convenient cooling solution for room additions, supplemental cooling for existing spaces and reaching areas where extending the ductwork just doesn't work. While ductless air conditioners cool by the same refrigeration principles as conventional central A/C systems, ductless installation requires the expertise of a qualified contractor, such as a Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Contractor. Find out why a Mitsubishi Electric ductless system is the best cooling solution for your home-improvement project, and how we install ductless air conditioners to leverage peak performance for optimal home comfort and save you energy year after year for a nice return on investment.

Why Choose a Mitsubishi Electric Ductless Air Conditioner?

Mitsubishi Electric ductless air conditioners are at the forefront of advanced and innovative ductless technologies, surpassing the competition for efficient cooling, quiet operation and convenient installation options. You can be assured that even when a Virginia heat wave tops 100 degrees, you can still count on a Mitsubishi Electric ductless system to provide energy-efficient cooling and dehumidification with the following:

  • Multiple sensors to regulate coil temperature
  • Precise refrigerant flow with inverter compressor technology
  • Multi-speed fan for energy efficiency and comfort
  • Sophisticated electronic sensory system to detect room temperatures from the floor to the ceiling (hot/cold spots)
  • Inverter technology to help Mitsubishi ductless systems reach 26 SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio), topping high-efficiency central A/C systems
  • Air filtration options including carbon activated filters, electrostatic filters, anti-bacterial filters or a combination filtration system

Why choose a Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Contractor?

If you've decided to select the best ductless air conditioner for your home improvement project, you naturally want the most qualified contractor to install such a system. Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Contractors are qualified independent HVAC contractors who have received individualized training and hands-on experience at Mitsubishi Electric-approved training centers. Contractors undergo extensive training for specific residential and complex commercial installments and service. Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Contractors are held to high standards and are committed to delivering professional service, estimates and installation of all Mitsubishi Electric systems.

How We Install Ductless Air Conditioners

Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Contractors are trained to deliver the best installation to suit your specific needs, providing many convenient options for inconspicuous location of system components, if desired. For instance, rather than a large outside unit of a central system, a ductless air conditioner's compact outside unit may be masked or tucked in with landscaping for aesthetics.

Another great advantage of enlisting a Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Contractor is how we install ductless air conditioners quickly and with minimal disturbance to your daily routine. There are three components to ductless air conditioners: the outside unit containing the condenser/compressor, a flexible conduit which traverses walls and other hidden spaces in the home and the indoor air handler(s) which provides on-the-spot cooling in lieu of bulky and inefficient ductwork.

It typically takes one day, perhaps two, to fully install a ductless system. How we install ductless air conditioners so quickly is a pleasant surprise for many homeowners, especially considering the multi-step process, time and expense it takes simply to extend ductwork into room additions.

Sizing Your New Ductless Air Conditioner

Your Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Contractor must perform a cooling load calculation in order to determine which size ductless air conditioner is needed to cool your living space. This is an important step in the installation process, which largely determines the energy efficiency of the ductless system, the initial purchase cost and the quality of cooling comfort you receive.

Using the old rule-of-thumb sizing methods will not do. If you install a system that is too small, it will not adequately cool the room or area. An over-sized system increases the purchase cost, and the system may cycle on and off frequently, which does not remove adequate moisture to control indoor humidity for better comfort.

We install ductless air conditioners with sophisticated software to calculate the cooling load, inputting dozens of design elements from your home. These are just a few:

  • Orientation to the sun (of the space to be cooled)
  • Number of occupants
  • Building materials
  • Air leakage and insulation properties
  • Square footage
  • Location in the home (e.g. retrofitted attic room, ground floor, basement, etc.)

Installing the Outdoor Unit

Once you and your Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Contractor have decided upon the installation configuration, the compact outdoor unit is installed first. The unit needs to be level and stable, which is provided for by pouring a 3-foot by 3-foot (approximate) concrete slab. While the outdoor unit may be tucked in with its surroundings for aesthetics, it will still need a minimum of 2 feet of clearance on all sides to allow unrestricted airflow, one of the primary ingredients for energy-efficient cooling.

The location of the outdoor unit is practically yours to choose, but it also depends on the proximity to the indoor living space which is to be cooled; that is, the distance to the air handler(s). Mitsubishi Electric ductless air conditioners offer homeowners great location options by the fact that the conduit which connects the outdoor unit to the air handler(s) may extend in excess of 150 feet, depending on the chosen model. This is three times the length which some of the competitors can offer.

Installing the Conduit

The flexible conduit is one of the components which makes ductless cooling possible. The conduit contains the refrigerant tubing which provides a channel for the refrigerant to flow through between the indoor evaporator coil (heat extraction) and the outdoor condenser coil (heat release). Mitsubishi Electric conduits are well insulated for this reason, transporting the refrigerant between coils. The conduit also contains electrical components for the power supply of the air handler(s), and houses the condensate line for water drainage at the evaporator coil.

Your Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Contractor connects the components to the outdoor unit and runs the condensate line for water drainage to the ground or to provide water for a flower bed, for instance. The conduit enters the outer wall of your home through a 3- to 4-inch hole. The conduit is installed within discreet spaces, such as inside walls, the attic, basement or crawl space. Another 3- to 4-inch hole is required in the wall or ceiling space to connect the conduit to the air handler.

Installing the Indoor Air Handler

The indoor air handlers contain the evaporator coil, fan and air filtration components. The air handlers are typically installed high on walls at 6 feet or more off the floor for premium air circulation. You'll also need to consider aesthetics when positioning your air handler for best results.

Air handlers may also be installed flush in drop ceilings, mounted to the ceiling or mounted on the floor with special air circulation enhancements. The conduit connects to the back of the air handler to connect the power supply, and the refrigerant tubing and condensate line to the evaporator.

If you are cooling more than one interior space with multiple air handlers, you'll enjoy independent temperature control (a built-in zoning system), which is sure to please occupants with customized temperatures, and you'll save energy by cooling spaces as needed, rather than cooling an entire floor or your entire home is it's unnecessary.

Each air handler is operated via handheld remote control. Depending on the ductless system you've selected, air handlers may be programmed for time and length of operation, air speed and temperature.

Warranty, Survey and Your Satisfaction

Once your ductless air conditioner installation is complete, your Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Contractor demonstrates the features, remote control operation and shows you a few do-it-yourself maintenance tips, such as cleaning the air filter. You should receive the owner's manual and all warranty information. To let us know how happy you are with your new ductless system and how we install ductless air conditioners, your contractor should explain the survey process with you if you wish to participate. Your complete satisfaction is our goal.
