Outdoor Single-Zone Units

Ductless heating and cooling units are convenient, energy-efficient and money-saving choices for home and commercial applications. Whether you install a ductless air conditioner or heat pump, the general configuration will be similar consisting of several indoor units and a large outdoor unit.

  • Indoor units: The indoor units of a ductless system are small air handlers that distribute heated or cooled air inside your home. They are usually available in wall-, ceiling- or floor-mounted models that can be placed almost anywhere in your home, depending on the length of the connections to the outdoor unit.
  • Outdoor unit: The outdoor unit contains the main components of the ductless HVAC system, such as compressors, condensers and power systems. Outdoor units are usually placed near an exterior wall of your home or business and are connected to the indoor units via a conduit penetrating the wall. The conduit contains power cables, refrigerant lines and condensate drain lines.

Energy Efficiency

Ductless heat pumps, air conditioners and heaters are very energy efficient for two main reasons:

  1. Ductless systems don't require a large network of ducts to carry heated and cooled air to points throughout your house. There is no chance of the duct-related leaks that can waste up to 40 percent of the air and energy traveling through the ducts. Ducts commonly develop leaks at loose connections between duct segments, at connections where the seal has broken, or in areas where the ducts are damaged or disconnected. Energy can also be lost through the relatively thin metal of the ductwork itself.
  2. Ductless systems are usually high-efficiency systems and are frequently Energy Star-certified, which means they have been government tested to be as energy efficient as possible. For example, Mitsubishi Electric single-zone heat pump systems have energy efficiency ratings as high as SEER 26 and HSPF 10.5.

SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) is a measure of the efficiency of the cooling provided by heat pumps and air conditioners. Higher SEER numbers indicate greater levels of system efficiency, with most high-efficiency units having SEER numbers between 14 and 18. HSPF (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor) indicates a heat pump's efficiency at heating. The higher the HSPF rating, the better the unit's efficiency. A heat pump with an HSPF of 8.2 or higher is rated as a high-efficiency model.

Mitsubishi Electric ductless heat pumps also improve efficiency by using Mitsubishi Electric's exclusive INVERTER technology. INVERTER-based units recapture a significant portion of the heat energy that would normally be lost at the coil in the outdoor unit. In comparison with non-INVERTER systems, Mitsubishi Electric INVERTER heat pumps:

  • Provide consistent levels of indoor comfort without significant temperature fluctuations.
  • Heat and cool your home quickly, reaching desired temperatures faster than non-INVERTER units.
  • Use less energy every time the compressor comes on, which saves electricity and reduces your monthly expenses.

Single-Zone vs. Multi-Zone Systems

When choosing among ductless heating and cooling units, you will need to make a choice between multi-zone and single-zone ductless systems.

  • A single-zone ductless system is designed to effectively heat or cool one individual zone with the indoor units. Multi-zone systems offer the ability to control several indoor units in multiple zones within your home. Control of four to eight indoor units is common.

Which Ductless System is Best for Me?

Your choice of ductless heating and cooling units will depend on the size of the area you want to condition and your family's individual preferences for indoor comfort.

  • If you have just a single zone of one or two rooms to condition, a single-zone system should provide all the heating or cooling you need.
  • If you want multiple zones with individual control in each, a multi-zone system will be the better choice. Multi-zone systems are useful in situations in which you want zones on different floors of your home or if you have several occupants in your home who will want individual temperature control in their rooms.
