West Point, VA Contractors

West Point is in King William County, VA, and situated on the York River. The York River is formed at West Point where the Pamunkey and Mattaponi Rivers merge.

This area was originally the village of Cinquoteck and home to Pamunkey and Mattaponi Native Americans who were part of the Powhatan Confederacy. As the first English colonists arrived in the early 1600s to establish a settlement in Jamestown, they were often at odds with the Powhatan Confederacy. However, by the mid 1600s, the Virginia Colony had grown sufficiently in the Cinquoteck area that the local Native Americans were overcome. The colonists created reservations for these tribes, and the reservations still exist today on land just north of West Point.

The Port Richmond West Plantation, home of Virginia Governor John West, was built in the Cinquoteck area in 1655. Mr. West sold parcels of land, and a community called West Point grew along the York River. The town was renamed Delaware in 1705, but in 1861 it was renamed West Point. The same year, the Richmond & York River Railroad was built, connecting West Point with Richmond and Baltimore. Until the late 1800s, the town was a popular resort destination and a thriving commercial port. That changed in the early 1900s when expanded railroad service gave tourists access to the ocean and commercial shippers moved to ports in Hampton Roads.

The town has an area of almost seven square miles with a population of almost 3,500 people. Out of 1,100 households, 35 percent include kids under 18. The median resident age is 39, and the median household income is $50,000.

The Chelsea Plantation is on the National Historic Registry and was built in 1709 by Augustine Moore, a tobacco farmer. The plantation house is recognized as "one of the finest examples of Georgian Architecture in America," and is situated on five acres of land with English Boxwood gardens and stunning views of the Mattaponi River.
