The emerging arts and cultural scene represents the area’s rich history and diverse heritage.

History

The Suffolk area was originally inhabited by Native Americans prior to the establishment of the original European colonies. The Nansemond River was perfectly positioned to promote commerce, and the English settlers organized several industries dependant on the river route.

The town of Suffolk was established in 1742 and named after Suffolk County, England, which was the home of Governor William Gooch.

Suffolk was burned to the ground by British troops in 1779, and several other fires ravaged the community throughout the 19th century. The city was incorporated in 1910 and eventually consolidated with the towns of Whaleyville and Holland in 1974. Major employers include Planters Peanuts, Lipton Tea, Raytheon and Lockheed Martin.
