History

Hampton has a rich historical tradition that predates the founding of the nation. The first English colonists arrived on the shores of coastal Virginia over 400 years ago and settled at Kecoughton in 1610.

The area is noted for the establishment of Fort Monroe in 1836. The fort is the largest masonry fortification in the nation and is completely encircled by a moat. A young Robert E. Lee was stationed at Fort Monroe and supervised the final phase of its construction.

During the Civil War, Virginia was allied with the confederacy, but Fort Monroe remained a Union stronghold. After the war ended, free men were taught skilled trades and educated at the Hampton Normal & Agricultural Institute.

The original city of Hampton was founded in 1849, but the town of Phoebus and Elizabeth City County merged with Hampton in 1952. The city is known as the founding site for NASA and where the seafood industry perfected the canning and pasteurization process.
