History

Christiansburg can trace its origin to the founding of Montgomery County in 1776. Named after General Richard Montgomery, a hero of the Revolutionary War, the county became a popular destination for settlers because of its abundant resources.

Originally established in 1792, Christiansburg was incorporated in 1833. The town was named after Colonel William Christian, and the city initially served as a transport stop along the Wilderness Road, which is now known as U.S. Route 11.

There are several notable American heroes who called Christiansburg home including Booker T. Washington, Daniel Boone, George Washington and Davey Crockett.
