How Ductless Heating and Cooling Systems Make Older Homes More Comfortable

Monday, December 02, 2013

Ductless systems in older homes have become an increasingly popular and viable alternative to central air and heating retrofits - or to making do with even less desirable options such as space heaters and window units. Introduced in Japan by Mitsubishi Electric over 30 years ago, ductless technology permits conditioning of individual spaces utilizing an outdoor heat pump and a compact air handler in each designated room. It's all made possible without the many drawbacks of installing new ducts or extending existing ductwork. Here are a few reasons why ductless systems are made to order for many existing older residences.

  • Duct-free installation. Many older homes were not constructed to accommodate the ductwork required for a central air or heat system. The amount of disruptive structural renovation required would be financially prohibitive in many cases and a major disruption of your household in all cases. Installation of a ductless system requires only mounting individual wall units in selected rooms and creating a small hole in an exterior wall. In most cases, a two-person crew can do the job in one day.
  • Greater efficiency. As its name implies, ductless systems in older homes also eliminate one of the major energy-efficiency drains in an HVAC system: the ducts. Residential ductwork is commonly a source of energy losses amounting to at least 30 percent of the heating and cooling you’re paying for. The older the home and any pre-existing ductwork may be, the greater the potential for lost heating and cooling due to leaks and deterioration in ducts.
  • Freedom from window units. The unsightly appearance of window air conditioners cooling individual rooms in older homes is common. These units block the view of the outdoors, introduce distracting noise directly into living spaces and may present a weak link in home security. A ductless heat pump not only eliminates window A/C units, it also provides warmth in winter, eliminating the need for room space heaters.
