How to Save on Heating This Winter

Friday, November 01, 2013

As the days grow colder and Virginians are ditching t-shirts for cozy sweaters, you might be thinking about your heating bill with trepidation. But there's no need to fear. There are some easy ways you can save on heating this winter. Just follow these steps.

  • Install a programmable thermostat. A programmable thermostat can go a long way when it comes to energy savings, because it allows you to easily set the temperature back when you're at work or asleep. Make sure your thermostat is installed properly and in a place where it can sense the average temperature in your home, so not in direct sunlight or in an unheated room or garage.
  • Turn down the temperature and put on a sweater. This tip seems like a no-brainer, but homeowners might be surprised to learn that setting the temperature just one degree cooler in the winter can reduce your energy use by 3 percent. Extra tip: covering your feet goes a long way toward warming you up, so put on a warm, comfy pair of socks before turning up the heating.
  • Take advantage of natural heat during the day. Open curtains, drapes and blinds during the day and close them at night to keep the heat in. You should keep your doors and windows closed as much as possible.
  • Make sure your home is properly insulated and weatherized. Insulation is crucial to your home's energy efficiency, especially attic and ceiling insulation, which prevent heat from rising out of your home's roof. Weatherstripping around windows and doors is also important. Door thresholds, window caulking and plastic window film are easy to install and prevent drafts of cold air.
  • Have your heating system professionally serviced every year. This is perhaps the most important step of all when it comes to saving money on heating. The money you spend to have your furnace and humidifier cleaned and filters changed is well worth it, as an annual servicing keeps your heating system running smoothly and efficiently.
