Keep Ductless Mini-Split Efficiency High -- Don't Neglect Routine Maintenance

Tuesday, July 30, 2013

Ductless mini splits aren’t your typical cooling and heating systems, but they still require routine maintenance to reach their high-efficiency potential. Remember ductless mini-split maintenance tasks during your household chores and yard work, and you'll enjoy better comfort and lower energy bills.

Ductless mini-split maintenance

Ductless systems need simple do-it-yourself care and scheduled preventive maintenance to keep components in top shape. Ductless mini splits are re-engineered air-source A/C or heat pump systems and need the same unrestricted airflow, optimal refrigerant levels and electrical components firing on all contacts.

The more technical tasks like checking refrigerant, electrical and drainage components are for your Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Contractor, but there are important do-it-yourself tasks for you:

  • Make sure you turn off each air handler and the outside unit before performing these tasks.
  • Keep the indoor unit clean by wiping it down on occasion.
  • Check the air filter every month. Clean the filter with a vacuum brush extension or rinse with warm water and mild soap. Let it air dry completely before reinstalling.
  • If your ductless mini split has a carbon filter, change it every three months.
  • Inspect the cooling coil and air-quality components for debris and mold. Clean with a dry cloth or use the vacuum brush. If you see or smell mold and mildew, wipe it as thoroughly as you can, and alert your Diamond Contractor. The components should be deep-cleaned and treated to remove and prevent the return of mold, bacteria and other contaminants.
  • Inspect the area around the outside unit for possible airflow restrictions, including vegetation, fencing and debris.
  • Remove the panel of the outside unit to access the coil. Remove dirt and debris with a dry cloth or garden hose.

Professional ductless mini-split maintenance

If you wish to maintain maximum comfort and energy efficiency with your ductless system, schedule professional maintenance each year. In addition to performing the homeowner do-it-yourself tasks, your Diamond Contractor checks the following:

  • Refrigerant charge
  • Electrical contacts
  • Drainage issues (prevent water damage inside walls)
  • Remote-control features and many more
