Keep an Eye on Your Energy Costs This Season With These 5 Important Tips

Wednesday, July 10, 2013

Keep energy costs down in your Virginia home this season by putting a few key tips into practice, as about half of the energy your home uses is due to heating and cooling. You will save money on your energy bill and contribute to a greener planet as a result.

  • Air filter: Clean and check your heating and cooling system's air filter regularly, especially during winter and summer when the unit is used frequently. Inspect the filter at least once a month if not more, and clean or change it when it is dirty (about every three months). Dirty filters slow airflow, making a heating and cooling unit expend that much more energy to keep the home comfortable. Clean filters also prevent dirt and dust buildup in the unit; this type of buildup can result in premature system failure.
  • HVAC tune-up: Have your heating and cooling system inspected yearly to keep it running efficiently. Research service providers and find a professional you know will do good work. Typical check-ups include lubricating moving parts, checking the thermostat, inspecting the condenser drain, tightening electrical connections and checking system controls.
  • Programmable thermostat: Investing in a programmable thermostat is ideal if you and your family are continually away from home. Used properly, you can save significant energy dollars annually.
  • Heating and cooling ducts: Seal all heating and cooling ducts, which are notorious for wasting energy. Seal ducts that run through your attic, unheated basement, crawlspace and garage first using foil tape and duct sealant. Once they are sealed wrap them with insulation to keep them from getting too hot or cold. Seal any other ducts in the house next.
  • ENERGY STAR equipment. A final consideration is investing in ENERGY STAR heating and cooling equipment, particularly if your current unit is over 10 years old. ENERGY STAR equipment is much more efficient and can result in significant energy savings annually.
