5 Key Advantages to Using a Ductless Mini Split

Tuesday, July 16, 2013

If you're in the market for a new cooling and heating system, a ductless mini split may be the ideal way to cool and heat your Virginia home. A mini-split system is comprised of an outdoor condenser unit, but instead of a large indoor evaporator unit, the mini split features discreet, wall-mounted blower units that are connected to the condenser with thin copper tubing. In the summer, heat is absorbed from your home and sent outside. In the winter, heat is absorbed from the outdoors and sent into your home. There are several key advantages of a ductless mini-split system:

  • No bulky ductwork. Rather than one blower unit that sends cool air through a system of ducts, the self-contained blower units of a mini split are placed throughout your home to cool each area.
  • Quiet operation. Traditional air conditioning systems require a large, noisy indoor evaporator unit, while the blower units of the ductless mini split are small and quiet.
  • Easy installation. The copper tubing that runs from the outdoor condenser unit to the indoor blower units requires only a small opening in the walls or ceilings of your home instead of large air ducts behind your walls.
  • Energy efficient. The typical traditional system loses about 20 percent of conditioned air through the joints in the ducts, while ductless mini splits lose less than 5 percent of conditioned air. Energy Star-qualified models can save you a considerable amount of money on your cooling costs.
  • Individual zoning. Ductless mini splits give you more control over cooling and heating your home. Instead of closing off ducts to unoccupied areas, which can inhibit the air flow of a traditional system, the individual blower units can be turned off without detriment to the system.
  • Eco-friendly operation. The refrigerant used in ductless mini-split systems won't deplete the ozone layer like traditional R-22 refrigerant, lowering your carbon footprint and protecting the environment.
